New Thornhill Manor receptionist inspired by residents’ resilience

Mapule Talane, a married mother of three from Thembisa, says her new role as receptionist at Thornhill Manor has given her a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for residents and the challenges older people face.

Mapule officially started in the position on February 1 after working as a casual reliever in various roles at Rand Aid, including as a general assistant, call centre agent and receptionist. Before joining Rand Aid, she spent three years working as a casual employee at Unilever.

Balancing family life with a busy working environment remains central to her daily routine. She and her husband, who works as a foreman at a mining company, have three children. Her eldest son is currently unemployed, her daughter completed matric in 2023 and is struggling to secure a place at university, while her youngest is in Grade 8.

Despite the pressures at home, Mapule says she values the stability and meaning her job brings. She describes enjoying family time, watching movies and playing quiz games with her children as a way to unwind.

Working closely with older residents has been a particularly eye-opening experience for her. She says she has been struck by the independence of many residents aged 80 and older.

“Being part of the wonderful people here and seeing their day-to-day lives has made me appreciate life more,” she says in reflecting on her experience.

Mapule adds that the role has also sparked a personal ambition to better support residents facing cognitive and mental health challenges such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. She hopes to further her knowledge so she can assist more effectively in difficult situations.

A cheery smile awaits visitors to the Thornhill Manor office complex.
