Elders and children make a great team!

Rand Aid’s Thembalami Care Centre and the Max Ordman Deaf Association (MODA) recently enjoyed their second visit to Willowbrook Montessori Preschool in Buurendal.

The care centre and preschool have teamed up so that the residents and children can spend some quality time together and enjoy each other’s company.

This month, two Thembalami residents, Aisla Lee and Fritz Konig; and two MODA residents, Lidia Elliott and Shaun White went to Willowbrook Montessori.

As September commemorates International Month of Deaf People, the care centre and preschool also aimed to generate awareness around and sensitise the children to the hearing impaired.

The residents thoroughly enjoyed their time colouring, playing and ‘baking’ with the children, and even helped the children to apply sunscreen before going outside to play. The children sang songs for the Elders and everyone had lots of fun.

“Our residents enjoyed their time with the children so much that they didn’t want to leave. For some of them, this is one of the few opportunities that have to get out and enjoy time with others,” says Thembalami and MODA manager Esme van der Walt.

“It’s a very successful partnership, and the children, residents, teachers and parents love the initiative. We are very grateful for this opportunity,” she adds.

The children enjoyed ice lollies after their lunch and the visit ended with huge hugs!
