Big-hearted Lynn is new Tarentaal social worker

With a deep-rooted passion for social justice and a wealth of experience in working with seniors, Lynn-Marie Barrow brings a valuable addition to the Tarentaal team.

The newly appointed village social worker’s career path was inspired by a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those in need. “As a young girl, I was moved by the injustices and inequality in the world.”

Her six years at a frail care centre provided her with invaluable insights into the challenges faced by older people and their families.

At Tarentaal, Lynn plays a vital role in supporting residents and their families. Her typical day involves co-ordinating with the Tarentaal team to address any concerns, responding to emails and calls, and conducting regular visits with residents – including those in recuperative care. She also facilitates family meetings to discuss specific needs and concerns.

Common issues faced by older persons in a retirement village setting include falls, declining health, technological challenges, and maintaining strong family relationships. Lynn-Marie is dedicated to providing support and guidance in these areas, ensuring that residents receive the assistance they require.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the joy I see in the eyes of a resident I have been able to help. That is priceless,” she says.

Lynn holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Rhodes University, 1992) and has a wealth of experience in the field of social work. Since joining Tarentaal, she has been impressed by the sense of togetherness and shared commitment among the staff and residents to create a welcoming and supportive environment.

When not working, the Kensington resident enjoys reading, listening to music, dancing, gardening, staying informed about current events, and walking her dog. She is also a proud grandmother to Azriella, who was born on Christmas Day, 2023.

“Her presence at Tarentaal will ensure that residents continue to receive the support and care they need to live their lives with dignity and independence,” says village manager Tammy Neilson.

Lynn started at Tarentaal at the beginning of August. She took over the reins from Ulricka Beukman, who has been promoted to village deputy manager.

“I live by the motto – borrowed from Mahatma Gandhi – that ‘the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others’,” says Lynn.
