This Mandela Day, residents and staff at Thornhill Manor retirement village came together to demonstrate their community spirit through a heartfelt initiative supporting those in need.
Every year on July 18, the world celebrates Nelson Mandela International Day, which pays tribute to the life and legacy of one of the most iconic figures in the fight for justice and equality. Officially declared by the United Nations in 2009, the day marks Mandela’s birthday and serves as a global call to action, encouraging individuals to make a positive impact in their communities.
Mandela Day was inspired by an appeal from Madiba himself, urging the next generation to take up the mantle of social responsibility. The number 67 holds special significance as it represents the 67 years Mandela devoted to public service, championing human rights and dismantling apartheid.
This year, Thornhill Manor answered that call in a meaningful way. Led by social worker Karen Griessel, the village launched a charity drive to collect at least 67 tins of food. Residents and staff rallied together and not only met the target, but exceeded it.
The generous donation was handed over to Marguerite Steyn, who manages the charity work at the NG Kerk in Edenvale. The church supports various vulnerable groups, including older persons in the community.
