A cheerful surprise tucked into a flower bed. A painted message peeking out near the clubhouse. At Elphin Lodge, the painted rock initiative is continuing to brighten days and bring people together – and it’s spreading across Rand Aid.
Residents have embraced the simple idea: Paint a rock, leave it somewhere to be discovered, and include the message:
“[Your Village] Rocks – Keep me or re-hide me!”
Painters can personalise this by using the name of their Rand Aid retirement village or care centre, or simply use ‘Rand Aid Rocks’.
From ducks and butterflies to colourful patterns and uplifting quotes, these mini works of art are popping up everywhere – in gardens, on benches, at the library, and beyond.
The initiative was started by an Elphin Lodge resident who wished to remain anonymous, but was soon embraced by the Elphin Lodge Art and Craft Group. Jenny Sella, who co-ordinates the group, says the response has been heartwarming. “I’m getting thank-you messages from residents,” she shares. “It’s amazing how something so small can have such a big impact.”
One message reads:
“Good morning, dear ‘Rock Lady!’ What a wonderful result of your painting! At first, I was confused looking out the kitchen window, then the penny dropped… Amazing – thank you and well done!”
Another resident wrote:
“Thanks for the delightful happy stones – I found them in my garden this morning. Lovely idea. Love, Anthea ❤️”
Get involved!
Residents across all Rand Aid communities are encouraged to join in. Grab a rock, get creative, and share a little joy.
And while the focus remains firmly on community and connection, Jenny and her team are also quietly exploring ways to support broader awareness campaigns, such as the Donate Life Rock Painting movement, which creates awareness of organ donations.
