Four baby rabbits are hopping straight into the hearts of Elphin Lodge retirement village residents!
The adventure began when resident Marlene Gordon found a lone rabbit and contacted Nadine Radford, the village’s social worker. Nadine, a rabbit owner, took the mother bunny home. She named her Lola and planned to have her spayed. But she returned from work on July 10 to discover four babies waiting, with a fifth, sadly, not surviving.
The four surviving siblings now live in a cosy hutch near the village dam, under shady trees – perfect for residents and visiting grandchildren to enjoy.
Residents even helped name the bunnies through a fun competition: Orlando, Gigi (short for ‘greedy guts’), Stu, and Tiggy, named after a resident’s beloved cat that has passed away. One suggestion, ‘Bunny Chow’, was deemed, well, a little too unpalatable!
Photos of the rabbits, their names, and treat guidelines are displayed on the hutch, making sure everyone knows how to care for the new arrivals.
The bunnies have quickly become stars of the village, bringing smiles, laughter and a little extra hop to everyday life at Elphin Lodge.
