A glass of ice-cold Coca-Cola was the perfect end to a 1km fun walk for residents of Ron Smith Care Centre (RSCC).
Simoné Botha, the centre’s occupational therapy and recreation manager, says the event on October 17 gave everyone the chance to celebrate life and fitness.
Although the day got off to a chilly start, the sun soon broke through the clouds, creating perfect weather for the walk, which started at 10am and looped through the beautiful Elphin Lodge grounds, in which RSCC is situated.
“There was a buzz of excitement as everyone counted down from 10 to start the walk. Along the route, rest stations offered water and juice, though most were eager to keep their stops brief and make it to the finish line!” she says.
The walkers enjoyed chatting, admiring the colourful gardens and even pausing to smell the roses.
At the finish line, each participant was greeted with a medal and a much-needed cold drink. “Afterwards, the tired but happy residents gathered for coffee, tea, chocolate cupcakes and plenty of laughter and conversation.
“It was a truly lovely morning that reminded us of the importance of walking and exercise to keep us young at heart – and of the joy of friendship, community and celebrating life together in the beautiful spring sunshine,” says Simoné.
