Inyoni Creek sets personal best with 6 304 squares for Mandela Day

Residents of Inyoni Creek Retirement Village have once again proved that every stitch can make a difference, setting a new village record by donating an incredible 6 304 knitted and crocheted squares that will be transformed into warm blankets for vulnerable South Africans this winter.

The initiative forms part of the village’s annual Mandela Day project, which has become a tradition in recent years as residents volunteer their time and talents to help those in need.

The colourful squares were officially handed over during a special gathering in the village clubhouse on July 14, where residents were thanked for their community spirit and dedication. Guests enjoyed soup and rolls while celebrating the achievement.

Among those attending was Malcolm Burroughs, a 67 Blankets ambassador, who accepted the donation on behalf of the organisation.

The squares will now be sewn together into blankets and distributed to vulnerable and marginalised communities through the 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day campaign.

Village manager Jenny Tonkin praised the residents for once again embracing the spirit of Mandela Day.

Nelson Mandela International Day is celebrated globally on July 18, the birthday of South Africa’s first democratically elected president. The annual 67 Minutes initiative encourages people to devote 67 minutes of their time to community service, symbolising the 67 years Mandela dedicated to fighting for social justice.

The 67 Blankets movement began in December 2013 after Madiba’s former personal assistant, Zelda la Grange, challenged Carolyn Steyn to create 67 blankets for Mandela Day. What started as a single challenge has grown into a nationwide movement.
