Rand Aid Association’s Elphin Lodge retirement village resident Maureen Waddington (100) received her Covid-19 vaccination on 18 May, as part of Phase 2 of government’s Covid-19 vaccination programme.
Maureen, who lives independently in the village with a part-time carer, was happy and positive during the vaccination process, and eager to receive her vaccination.
Rand Aid, which runs independent-living retirement villages, frail care centres and a substance abuse treatment centre, has setup various Covid-19 vaccination stations for its residents.
“The Department of Health gave specific instructions on how to set up vaccination stations and what equipment to provide,” says Rand Aid’s senior nursing manager Avril Maltman, who is heading up the project.
“Our village sisters and identified staff at Ron Smith Care Centre have been trained as vaccinators. In total, we have 10 registered Rand Aid Association trained vaccinators who will move from vaccination site to vaccination site,” she adds.
Ron Smith Care Centre, Elphin Lodge and Thornhill Manor residents are being vaccinated at Elphin Lodge, while Tarentaal, Inyoni Creek and Wedge Gardens residents will be vaccinated at Tarentaal. Thembalami and Max Ordman Deaf Association residents will be vaccinated at Thembalami Care Centre.
Each vaccination station includes a waiting area, where chairs are provided while residents wait for their turn; a registration station, where residents will be ‘checked in’; a screening station; which will include a temperature check and questionnaire; a waiting area after screening, from which residents will be called for vaccination; a vaccination station, where monitors will direct residents to the next available vaccinator; and an observation station, where residents will be observed after their vaccination for any possible side effects.
