Thornhill Manor welcomes spring in style

Rand Aid’s Thornhill Manor retirement village residents welcomed spring and celebrated Arbor Week with a tree-planting ceremony on 2 September.

Arranged by Wendy Hunt, Thornhill Manor’s Garden Club chairlady, the ceremony included the planting of a white olive tree, kindly donated to the village by Servest, followed by tea and delicious, sweet treats.

During her talk, Wendy said 2022’s Tree of the Year is a Pompom Tree.

“Every year since 1996, two tree species have been chosen as Tree of the Year. One is common and one rare. This year, however, the Department of Foresty, Fisheries and the Environment has selected three trees – a common tree, one for promotion and one for appreciation.”

The trees are:

  • Common tree: Dais cotinifolia (Pompom tree).
  • Tree for Promotion: Peltophorum africunum (African Black Wattle).
  • Tree for Appreciation 1: Aloidendron dichotomum (Quiver Tree).
  • Tree for Appreciation 2: Aloidendron pillansii (Giant Quiver Tree).
Front: Abram Mapyane and Landric Mathebula from Servest dug the hole and planted the tree. From left to right: Lorna Turner, Helga Bultemeier, Jean Pearce, Wendy Hunt, Erna Lloyd, Janet Colville, Dale Cherrington, Esme Erasmus (Thornhill manager), Janet Davies, Erna Bird, Vicky Keenan, Stephen Walker, Val Tyrteos, Enid Dixon, Joy Blain and Loretta Allisio. The dogs in attendance are Cheeky and Layla. Standing: Dawn and Brian Burls.
