Lawn darts played to welcome spring at Thornhill Manor

Warmer days mean an opportunity to get outside to play, explore and socialise.

“Nearly everyone can benefit from fresh air and a little sunshine,” says Vicky Keenan of Rand Aid’s Thornhill Manor. Vicky is a resident and qualified occupational therapist who runs the village’s Happy Chatters group. Members get together for fun activities that are designed to promote well-being.

The group’s latest session, on September 9, saw lawn darts, also known as garden darts, being played.

“Creative takes on classic games, along with new ideas, can spark progress with speech, reinforce social skills, and encourage healthy movement,” says the village’s social worker Karen Griessel.

Lawn darts blends fun, skill, and a bit of friendly competition. Played with specially designed, darts and targets, the game involves throwing the darts towards a goal to earn points.

“But let’s not forget the health benefits,” says Karen. “Lawn darts encourages physical activity. Every toss gets you moving, improving your hand-eye co-ordination, balance, and even your focus. Plus, playing outdoors means soaking up that lovely sunshine.”
