Laughter, creativity and a display of millinery artistry filled the air at Thornhill Manor retirement village during their monthly tea and annual Easter Bonnet Parade.
A beloved tradition, this year’s parade was expertly arranged by the Entertainment Committee. Residents showcased an array of imaginative headwear, embodying the spirit of community and joyful engagement that lies at the heart of the Rand Aid Way philosophy.
The village’s monthly tea morning, headed by Maggie Bold, is a highlight on the Thornhill Manor calendar and the Easter Bonnet Parade made the April event extra special, with whimsical designs ranging from the exquisitely delicate to the hilariously outlandish. Maggie’s attention to detail extended beyond the parade itself, with stunning table decorations creating a festive atmosphere. Jackie Scott, Thornhill Manor’s deputy manager, acknowledged her dedication and unwavering support.
A notable milestone this year was the participation of the first male entrant, Len Larson, who not only embraced the spirit of the event but also walked away with the prize for the ‘Most Creative’ hat. His participation underscored the inclusive and engaging environment fostered at Thornhill Manor, where residents are encouraged to participate fully in community life, a key tenet of the Rand Aid Way. This philosophy emphasises creating a supportive and stimulating environment where individuals can thrive and enjoy life to the fullest, regardless of age.
Twelve enthusiastic contestants proudly paraded their creations before an appreciative audience. Many participants are long-time supporters of the event, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity each year with new bonnets.
The judges faced a delightful challenge in selecting the winners, ultimately recognising the following outstanding creations:
Most Creative: Len Larson
Funniest Hat: Enid Dixon
Prettiest Hat: Vicky Keenan (also awarded ‘Most Appropriate Hat’).
The success of the event is a testament to the community spirit nurtured within the village. It not only celebrates the arrival of Easter but also reinforces the importance of community, participation and the simple pleasures that enhance the quality of life for all residents at Thornhill Manor.
