Sunshine and community spirit marked Arbor Day at Thornhill Manor this morning as residents, garden club members and Servest staff came together to plant a tree in the park.
By 10am, Servest had prepared the hole with all the necessary fertiliser, ready for the day’s celebration.
The day’s focus was the planting of a karee tree, generously donated by Len and Felicity Larson. Known scientifically as Searsia lancea, the karee is a fast-growing, hardy, evergreen tree native to southern Africa. With its graceful, weeping form, dense canopy, and glossy trifoliate leaves, the tree is not only attractive but also practical, providing shade, supporting wildlife and producing edible fruit.
The new tree, which was ceremoniously planted by Servest, will contribute to creating shaded areas in the park, ensuring comfort for visitors and stallholders at Thornhill Manor’s annual Fete.
“Planting new trees is vitally important for our precious earth for oxygen into the atmosphere and carbon dioxide elimination,” said Wendy Hunt, who arranges the annual Arbor Day celebration.
After the planting, everyone enjoyed tea and cake in the community centre, kindly provided by the garden club.
