Important warning: Bank scams targeting older people

Older South Africans are increasingly being targeted by criminals trying to steal money from their bank accounts.

According to an article published by BusinessTech on October 13, FNB’s head of Card Transact, Christopher Boxall, says fraudsters are particularly targeting people over 55 – and especially those over 60.

Criminals are becoming more convincing. They may pretend to be from your bank’s fraud department and tell you there is an urgent problem with your account.

They may already know some of your personal details, making the call or message sound genuine.

Please remember:

  • Never give anyone your banking password, PIN, CVV or card details.
  • Never tell someone a one-time PIN (OTP) that you receive on your phone.
  • If someone calls saying there is a problem with your bank account, stop and take your time. Do not let them pressure you.
  • Do not approve a payment or transaction simply because someone tells you it is necessary to protect your money.
  • If you are unsure, end the call and contact your bank using the telephone number on your bank card or an official bank statement.
  • If something feels suspicious, speak to a trusted family member or friend before taking action.

Amanda Diener, Rand Aid’s GM of commercial and compliance, says residents should remember that a genuine bank employee will not pressure you into making an immediate decision or ask you to reveal your confidential banking details.

“The safest thing you can do is stop. If someone contacts you unexpectedly and creates a sense of urgency or fear, do not act immediately. End the conversation and check with your bank through an official channel.”

She added: “Please don’t be embarrassed if you think you may have been targeted. These criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and anyone can be caught off guard. Asking someone you trust for help is a sensible step, not something to be ashamed of.”

When in doubt: STOP, CHECK and ASK FOR HELP.
