Rand Aid’s Ron Smith Care Centre recently brought the bush to residents at a wonderful safari-themed event which some residents attended on 24 January and others on 25 January.
The bushveld experience, which took place at RSCC’s recreation centre, saw residents surrounded by small and large animal cut-outs of elephants, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, lions and meerkats.
Rustic table décor was made from tree bark, hessian, foliage and miniature animal figurines adding to the ambience, and relaxing bushveld background sounds filled the air.
Residents each received a welcome cool drink and snacked on biltong and chips while awaiting an exciting presentation about Africa’s wild animals. A guess the animal slideshow was next, where residents were shown an image of part of an animal and had to guess what it was.
They were also treated to a virtual game drive and tried to ‘spot’ various animals, which were cleverly camouflaged in the ‘bush’. Each person who was first to answer each question correctly received a chocolate, and the team with the most correct answers won the grand prize.
Residents then enjoyed a short BBC video clip about interesting wild animals’ behaviour and habits.
A lucky draw, in which residents took an animal card out of a hat, was held at the end of the event. The person who picked the baboon won a lucky prize.
“Our residents loved reminiscing about all the bush holidays they had in the past and many mentioned how the Kruger National Park was their favourite holiday destination,” says Debbie Christen, Rand Aid’s manager of recreational programmes.
“RSCC’s bush experience ended with coffee or tea and a delicious piece of milk tart. It was a lovely end to a fun-filled morning,” she adds.
