The Edenvale Philatelic Society has made a welcome return to Thornhill Manor retirement village in Modderfontein after three-year separation due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The first club meeting took place at the end of August in the village hall, with 18 people in attendance.
Club secretary Robbie Schmidt showcased his collection of 6th Definitive South African postage stamps. This collection holds a gold medal award of excellence and has been accepted for international exhibitions from Australia to the USA. It comprises 128 pages.
Colin Bousfield, the president, gave a talk on stamp perforations – the various types that have been used to separate stamps and why they have varied from time to time and from country to country.
Formed in 1976 by Malcom Driver and the late George vd Hurk at a meeting of like-minded people, the club’s objective is to promote interest in stamp collecting. It meets monthly and gives members an opportunity to display their collections, discuss relevant topics and attend workshops. In addition, small auctions are held from time to time and a monthly raffle generates some funds.
Items of interest also feature and often lead to interesting discussions. Swap and sales opportunities also present some added interest.
The society welcomes visitors. You don’t have to be a philatelist just an interested party. For information, contact Colin Bousfield on 082 309 8656 or Robbie Vermont on 082 800 3704.
