Paws for joy: Therapy dogs bring smiles to Thembalami Care Centre

The residents of Thembalami Care Centre enjoyed a morning of wagging tails and warm companionship on March 11 when a special visit from therapy dogs brought a wave of joy.

The visit offered residents a chance to connect with the animals both in communal outdoor areas and during more personal room visits.

The therapeutic power of animals was on full display as residents engaged with their four-legged visitors. Lydia Batchelor shared a quiet moment with golden boy Chase in a shaded outdoor courtyard. Theunis de Bruin and Marianne Venter enjoyed the company of Sherrie, whose calm presence sparked a heartwarming interaction.

For those unable to join the group in the garden, the dogs made their way to individual rooms. Roslyn Cronin received a bedside visit from Chase, bringing a bright smile to her face as they interacted. Josephine Baylis, Isabella Keylock and Eunice de Jager also spent quality time with Chase, with the golden retriever providing much-appreciated companionship. Alice Jardim was seen beaming with delight while greeting the dogs during their rounds through the centre.

These visits are a vital part of the holistic care provided at the centre, as interaction with therapy animals is known to help reduce feelings of loneliness and encourage social engagement among seniors. The gentle nature of Chase and Sherrie ensured that every resident could experience the simple, profound comfort of a dog’s company.
