There was plenty of cheering and friendly competition at Thornhill Manor as members of the Happy Chatters group took part in a series of ‘horse races’ using colourful wooden horses, reins and a healthy dose of imagination on July 6.
The unusual races formed part of the village’s Happy Chatters group, run by Thornhill Manor resident and qualified occupational therapist Vicky Keenan.
Armed with colourful ‘horses’, strings for reins and pool noodles to help manoeuvre their steeds, residents eagerly raced their way to the finish line as fellow participants cheered them on.
The activity provided more than just entertainment. Thornhill Manor social worker Karen Griessel said sessions like these encourage residents to stay active while enjoying each other’s company.
“Vicky has a wonderful way of turning simple ideas into engaging activities that get everyone involved. Games like these encourage gentle movement, improve co-ordination, stimulate thinking and memory and, most importantly, bring people together. Sharing laughs, cheering on friends and using a little imagination all help boost well-being and create meaningful social connections,” says Karen.
She adds that the morning showed how a few simple props and plenty of creativity can transform an ordinary day into a memorable one.
