With singing, dancing, drumming and delicious braaied food, Heritage Day once again proved to be one of the highlights of the year at Ron Smith Care Centre (RSCC).
RSCC celebrated this special day on September 25, giving everyone the opportunity to celebrate our diverse cultures and show off their beautiful cultural attire. Staff and residents alike came dressed in cultural and spring-inspired outfits. Colourful necklaces and headgear were shared to ensure that everyone felt special and beautiful on the day.
The morning started with a wonderful variety of cultural dances, including isiZulu, Xitsonga and Sepedi dances performed by RSCC own staff members. Occupational therapist Karabo Matlaletsa added to the experience by sharing interesting facts and information about each of these South African cultures.
The dancing was followed by even more fun as Drum Café got everyone involved in an interactive drumming session. The drums had everyone smiling, clapping, drumming and moving along to the beat. “It was a wonderful way to engage the mind, body and emotions while bringing everyone together through music and rhythm,” says Simoné Botha, the centre’s occupational therapy and recreation manager.
The morning of entertainment ended with Brenda Fassie’s much-loved song, Vuli Ndlela, giving staff members a final opportunity to entertain everyone and get the crowd moving!
After a busy morning filled with music, dancing and laughter, everyone was ready for a delicious braaied meal, generously supplied by Reef Caterers. The aroma of meat cooking over the fires had everyone hungry and eagerly awaiting lunchtime. The meal was rounded off with a truly South African favourite – a delicious peppermint crisp tart.
“Heritage Day was a wonderful celebration of culture and togetherness, reminding us that our differences are something to celebrate and that there is always something special about coming together as a community,” says Simoné.
