In the true spirit of Mandela Day, a heartwarming collaboration brought together residents of Ron Smith Care Centre and clients from SANCA Wedge Gardens for a fun-filled baking session.
A few days before Mandela Day, SANCA Wedge Gardens occupational therapist Caryn Berman and nine of her clients joined residents at Ron Smith Care Centre to bake chocolate chip biscuits. The visitors spread out among the residents, assisting with mixing dough, rolling biscuits and baking them to perfection.
“They also helped serve tea and shared a biscuit with the residents, which created a warm and social atmosphere,” says Caryn. “What impressed us most was their willingness to pitch in without being asked – they even washed all the dishes and baking trays, which was hugely appreciated by the Ron Smith therapists.”
Adding a special touch, SANCA’s occupational therapy assistants crocheted Worry Worms, attaching one to each packed biscuit. These thoughtful packages were handed to Wedge Gardens’ staff and residents on Mandela Day.
“It was wonderful to spoil the staff and acknowledge the care and effort they put in every day,” says Caryn. “We look forward to more joint initiatives between the occupational therapy departments in the future.”
