There is a profound beauty in the simple act of sharing a cup of coffee. Recently, at Elphino’s coffee shop, Amanda Diener, Rand Aid’s GM of commercial and compliance, sat down with Irvine Sinnett, a resident of Ron Smith Care Centre (RSCC). While the setting was casual, the conversation captured the very essence of The Rand Aid Way.
Irvine, who spent 24 years at Scaw Metals and rose to the position of group materials manager, is a man of deep experience and history. From captaining soccer teams in his youth to raising a large, loving family of nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, his life has been defined by contribution and connection.
In November 2025, Irvine was one of two residents invited to participate in the Eden Associate training. This inclusive workshop brought together staff from all levels – from housekeepers to managers – to reinforce a relational model of care. For Irvine, the experience was transformative. He remarked that it made him realise how much he still has to contribute, proving that while he may no longer live independently, his voice and wisdom remain vital to our community.
The Eden Alternative philosophy is the foundation on which The Rand Aid Way is built: Moving away from institutional settings toward vibrant, inclusive communities where every person feels valued.
Rand Aid believes that ageing is a journey of continued growth. Moments like these remind us that real well-being is found in respect, joy and the meaningful relationships built every day.
