This special day for the elderly is celebrated every year on 1 October to spread awareness about the importance of senior citizens in our society and to appreciate their contributions. Senior citizens carry much responsibility on their shoulders as leaders of society. They also carry the traditions and culture of their society and pass on their knowledge to the younger generation.

Life expectancy

People worldwide are living longer and, while life expectancy among people is improving with better healthcare, lifestyle, sufficient food and improved medical care, the same cannot be said about the quality of life for the elderly. Advancement in medicines and other technologies, improvement in education, economics, sanitation, medical science, and health care has also contributed immensely to an increase in life expectancy. Moreover, it is of note that not every older person has the resources to access the above-mentioned.

Significance

The significance of this International Day is to bring about awareness of the inclusion of older persons, while tackling stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. The World Health Organisation has been playing a significant role in celebrations, and actively promoting public awareness of the day. Discussions have been held relating to the ageing population, providing adequate health provisions, social care and volunteer work.
