The arrival of spring and the warmer weather gave residents and staff at Ron Smith Care Centre every reason to celebrate. On Friday, September 19, the centre marked the season by coming together to honour both spring and the many cultures of South Africa.
Blessed with a warm, sunny day, everyone gathered in colourful spring and cultural attire at the Woodlands Garden and Lapa. The décor – red and green Shweshwe overlays, bright sunflowers, clay-coloured pots, and flags from around the world – created an atmosphere of joy and excitement.
Festivities began with the incredible voice and energy of Abigail Beard, who entertained the crowd with classics from Abba, Queen, Ben E King and Elvis Presley. Residents and staff were soon on their feet, dancing and singing along to the lively music.
The entertainment continued with two groups of staff showcasing traditional dances. Both Sepedi and Zulu performances, delivered in vibrant cultural attire, were a highlight of the day. “It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying the music, dancing, and celebrating our country’s rich heritage together,” said Simoné Botha, OT and recreation manager at Ron Smith Care Centre.
Meanwhile, the delicious aroma of meat on the braai filled the air, building anticipation for a proudly South African meal of braaiied chicken, ‘paptert’, pumpkin muffins and Greek salad, rounded off with a classic milk tart.
One family member captured the spirit of the day: “Thank you for all that you do. Your dedication is priceless. Your love for a party brings joy to the residents and comfort to their families.”
