Thornhill Manor brightens the day for dementia residents

Thornhill Manor’s Alzheimer’s awareness fundraising initiative has extended a helping hand to the Ron Smith Care Centre, specifically the River Lodge 3 dementia wing. The wing is undergoing a cheerful transformation, thanks in part to the generosity of Thornhill Manor’s community.

Carol Foulis and Thornhill’s ‘knit and knatter’ team donated a collection of soft toys. These cuddly companions have the power to soothe and comfort dementia patients, often sparking positive memories and reducing anxiety.

“Studies have shown that soft toys can be incredibly beneficial for people with dementia,” explains Karen Griessel, Thornhill Manor’s social worker. “They can evoke nostalgia and warmth, improving mood and overall well-being. Sometimes, simply having a soft toy nearby can provide comfort and reassurance.”

The staff at Ron Smith Care Centre are planning to brighten the entrance area to River Lodge 3 with the colourful artificial flowers donated by Thornhill and decorate it with new curtains and tablecloths.

Debbie Christen, the care centre’s facilitator of recreational and training services, expressed sincere gratitude to Thornhill Manor: “We are grateful for Thornhill Manor’s support. Your generosity has allowed us to create a brighter, more tranquil space for our residents. The soft toys, flowers, and cash donation towards the cost of curtaining material have made a significant difference. We are confident that this refreshed environment will positively impact the lives of our residents.”
