A big chocolate cake and the cheer of fellow residents and staff made Thembalami Care Centre resident Joy Faddle’s 91st birthday a special occasion, despite the coronavirus lockdown. The cake was dropped off by Joy’s daughter and the two enjoyed a quick chat – albeit it with a gate and a few metres distance between them. Joy was a long-time resident of Tarentaal village before moving to Thembalami in November 2019. “She was a teacher by profession and enjoyed crocheting. Despite her age and physical limitations, Joy tries to stay independent and do as much for herself as possible,” says Lara Hurwitz, Thembalami’s social worker.
