Tarentaal Retirement Village came alive on Friday, March 13, as residents and visitors flocked to its popular monthly market morning, held in the village hall on the second Friday of every month.
The event, a highlight on the village’s social calendar, combines shopping, treats and camaraderie in a lively, community-focused atmosphere.
Residents and outside stallholders offered a variety of goods, from homemade treasures to shoes and clothing. Food and drink were also on the menu, including tea, coffee, flapjacks, and toasted chicken mayo and cheese sandwiches, and the beloved ice-cream truck made its customary stop. Music created a cheerful backdrop for browsing and socialising.
“The market remains a key fundraiser for the village, with profits going directly into the residents’ central fund to support community events, particularly the end-of-year Christmas dinner,” says village deputy manager Lynn Barrow.
The event is not only popular with Tarentaal residents; visitors from other Rand Aid villages and members of the public also turn out.
For those who love a bargain, the village also has a white elephant store – both at the market and open twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 11am, giving shoppers even more chances to find hidden treasures.
